On 1st October 1960, the Nigerian people could not hold their excitement as they finally broke out from the shackles of colonialism, slavery, and the imperial rule of the Queen of England. For the longer years of intimidation, infringement of human rights, desecration of the traditional Nigerian society, exploitation of natural resources and introduction of systems that at best worked against the Nigerian people and the misunderstanding and war between the amalgamated protectorates. The first Republic coming to an early end through coups and counter coups was unplanned and unforseen. In fact, it was disastrous and deadly was its consequences. Attempts to eradicate bad governance led to the above mentioned fatal experiences and all hopes for change placed on the civilians coming back to occupy the seat of power were a mere imagination. The 2023 election has once again proven beyond any doubt that indeed the masses are the owners of power. How the big actors travel to the nooks and crannies of rural communities to canvass support is a lesson to be learnt by those who undermine the voices and collective will of the people at the grassroots. The promises made by these politicians no longer motivates the people as much as the money and bags of salts and other well meaning items to the stomach do. This is because they have had and heard enough of unfulfilled promises and yet these bigger boys do not have any atom of remorse but still come to them for support. For the common people, this is an opportunity to make as much as possible from the overflowing tap of the national treasury knowing too well that after March 2023 and perhaps final verdicts at the Supreme Court, the streets will return to its vicious bites of hunger and state of penury.
